If you are an Anne McCaffrey fan like myself you were floating on air the day you found out that Warner Bros. would be making a Dragonflight movie, and you were winking in out from between when the screenwriter was confirmed!
The flame to complete my original paperback collection of the Dragonriders of Pern series was ignited. In my frantic online search for the books, I stumbled across a gem of an Etsy store appropriately named “Dragonflight Dreams.” It’s not the bookstore I was looking for, but the store features gorgeous dragon prints on a variety of home decor and clothing. I had to know whether or not the store was founded upon the book series, so I reached out to the store owner, Amanda Cobb, and asked her a few questions. Amanda was quick to respond!
When did you start Dragonflight Dreams, and how did you come up with the name?
I started Dragonflight Dreams about 3 ½ years ago. I remember sitting down with a piece of paper and kind of brainstorming the name. I wrote down a bunch of words/ideas I liked (dragon, flight, myth, story, etc.) and played around with combinations until I found something I liked. It was originally Dragonflight Apparel, because I started the shop with just clothing, but as the shop and blog grew I changed it to Dragonflight Dreams to encompass everything.
Did you read Anne McCaffrey’s “Dragonflight” before or after you opened up shop?
I read the whole Pern series way back in high school (over a decade ago now) and loved it, but the fact that she had a book titled exactly ‘Dragonflight’ honestly didn’t cross my mind when I was naming my shop.
What inspires the designs you use? Which one is your favorite?
My designs are inspired mainly by two sources: stories (mythology, fantasy, etc.) and nature. It’s hard to choose a favorite. I think (coincidentally, appropriately) that my two favorites are the dragon and the feather.
What piece of advice would you give an entrepreneur just starting out?
That’s kind of a broad question. A lot of advice I would give would be contingent upon what kind of business they were starting, and whether they were jumping in full time or building it up on the side. I guess in general terms I would say a) have a plan, b) make sure you know what you need legally/financially to be compliant with your local laws, and c) don’t put social media on the back burner.
What are you hoping to find under the Christmas tree this year?
My boyfriend has hinted that he got me something big, but won’t give any other clues as to what. We’re going to his parents’ house in Arizona, and he shipped it straight there, so I wouldn’t see the return address on the box – sneaky! He tends to go all-out with gifts, so my mind is jumping to everything from an iPad to a ring. I guess I’ll find out in about a week. 🙂

In addition to her dragon prints, Amanda has equally beautiful feather, dragonfly, and geometric designs. Her artwork is timeless and evokes the feeling of family crests and medieval flags, hinting at another world.
