You’ve all seen Xena right? My favorite episode is from season 5 entitled “Lyre, Lyre, Hearts on Fire.” I think you’ll understand why after you watch this video:
Pretty awesome right! Of course, nobody does it better than Aretha Franklin. Now I could do an entire post on Xena-crossover music, but that’s not why I’m here today. I wanted to share with you all the story of a woman who is “doing it for herself” by starting up her own business.
I met Evon through a great community called Female Geek Bloggers and was impressed by her flair for style and cosplay on her fun website Evon Von. She’s bold and she’s got some serious creativity. When I found out she also has a business I wanted to learn more about what inspires her and how she got started.

I reached out to her with some questions and Evon was quick to get back to me. Here is what she had to say:
I initially wanted to start my own business to share my crafts with the world. I love crafting and creating things, and I’m always working on something. I am a military spouse and currently not working outside of my home, so I wanted to make my passion into something profitable.
Getting started wasn’t that difficult, but a big obstacle has been being seen. There are so many talented, crafty and creative people, sometimes it’s difficult to find a way to stand out. Because my business is fairly new, I’m trying to find a way to set myself apart from other people.
I consider myself a nerd, so my inspiration comes from a lot of my interests. I love video games, comic books, superheroes, anime and anything nostalgic. I have a running list from each category of projects I want to create!
Currently, a lot of my projects consist of sewing, polymer clay, or resin. I’d love to include more variety of projects to my store. I am currently looking into screen printing!
I love to hear a good origin story, and Evon’s got a great one! Her store EvonVon is on Etsy and she carries a fun selection of plush dolls, accessories, and artwork. She also does custom work for special orders.

Of course, the all important question for someone as skilled as Evon is with cosplay was “What are you going to be for Halloween this year?”
Originally I was going to be Zatanna for Halloween, then I decided to be a voodoo variation of her!
Please tweet us some of your photos, Evon! *Sigh* Your costume sounds a lot better than my lazy one! I just wore an old Sailor Moon t-shirt with a blue skirt. Such is my lack of creativity…
So to all my fellow lady geeks out there, check out Evon’s shop and tell us about your own in the comments section!
