Sony Pictures has awesomely invited Lauren Faust, My Little Pony creative director and executive producer, to produce a new animated comedic version of Medusa. I have seen (and heard) enough about My Little Pony to have full confidence in Lauren’s ability to turn this very gendered mythological tale on its many-snaked head.
Medusa is not one of my favorite myths. It is bloody, it is misogynistic, and it is generally not a very nice story to tell your children. The following excerpt is from Wikipedia:
In a late version of the Medusa myth, related by the Roman poet Ovid (Metamorphoses 4.770), Medusa was originally a ravishingly beautiful maiden, “the jealous aspiration of many suitors,” but because Poseidon had raped her in Athena’s temple, the enraged Athena transformed Medusa’s beautiful hair to serpents and made her face so terrible to behold that the mere sight of it would turn onlookers to stone.[6] In Ovid’s telling, Perseus describes Medusa’s punishment by Minerva (Athena) as just and well earned.
I am beyond curious to know how Lauren will help spin this story around. Will the film tell it as it was told? Will they do it metaphorically, just as the Angelina Jolie did playing the scene where Maleficent’s wings are cut off? Or will Lauren help weave a brand new tale altogether? I know I’ll be first in line opening night to find out!
BTW have you seen the Bob’s Burgers Equestranauts parody of My Little Pony? I highly recommend it.

If they’re going comedic, I’m 100% certain they will excise the rape from the story. My bet would be that they’ll mix it up with Arachne or something — have her get cursed by some jerk god for upstaging them or insulting them.

I think you’re right – the tale will have to be rewritten to be suitable for general audiences. I just googled Arachne because I am not familiar with that story. She sounds pretty cool herself! Maybe she’ll get her own movie someday 🙂
